The iconic calendar has traded in their traditional calendar
girls- the world’s most gorgeous women- for intimate portraits of 13 women who
are shaping the world today, clothed and photographed by a female photographer.
I cannot wait to get my hands on it.
The Pirelli Calendar is a long running, high-fashion project that is on every supermodels bucket list. Traditionally, the calendar girls are some of the most beautiful supermodels and celebrities, shot mostly NSFW, by the most famous photographers to date. Some of the icons behind the lens have included Annie Leibovitz ,Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Richard Avedon, Mario Sorrenti, Karl Lagerfeld, Patrick Demarchelier, Peter Lindbergh and Herb Ritts.
Leibovitz, who is shooting
the 2016 Pirelli Calendar, took a dramatically different approach this time around and decided to feature women not based on their looks
alone, but also their accomplishments- and they will be wearing clothes.
“I started to think about the
roles that women play, women who have achieved something...This calendar is so
completely different. It is a departure,” Leibovitz said to Vogue. “The idea
was not to have any pretense in these pictures and be very straightforward.”
The calendar girl line up
this year includes Tavi Gevinson, Amy Schumer, Yoko Ono, Serena Williams, Patti Smith, writer Fran Lebowitz, Selma director Ava DuVernay, major arts
patron Agnes Gund, film producer Kathleen Kennedy, finance exec Mellody Hobson,
artist Shirin Neshat, actress Yao Chen and supermodel Natalia Vodianova, who is
being honored for her charity work with the Naked Heart Foundation.
