More than 100 million animals are poisoned, burned, crippled, and abused in other ways in U.S. labs each year. No experiment is illegal no matter how cruel, irrelevant to human health, redundant, or painful and 95% of animals used for experiments are excluded from the only federal law offering any sort of protection.
If you’ve been wondering when America is going to catch up with modern advancements, consumer
expectation and global progress when it comes to cosmetic animal testing, the
time has finally come.
Animal testing of cosmetic products and ingredients, as well as
the sale of newly animal-tested cosmetics, will be phased out within one year.
The passing of the Humane Cosmetics Act, H.R.2858,
will make it illegal for any company—public or private—to conduct cosmetic
animal testing, or sell cosmetic products that have been tested on animals. The
new legislation will bring the U.S. in line with more than 30 other countries that
have already implemented similar bans.
“Given the ready availability of
alternatives, there is no compelling reason to continue using outdated animal
testing methods that cause tremendous animal suffering,” Wayne Pacelle, HSUS
president, said in a press release.
This landmark legislation addresses
the cruelty of animal testing for cosmetics and seeks to ensure that no animals
will suffer in order to ensure product safety.
