7 Documentaries Surrounding Women's Issues To Watch Now

It is so important, and our individual responsibility frankly, to stay informed, as it is the only way that we can effectively spark change, and fight for the betterment of our world and everyone living in it. Get your Netflix queue and your tissues, and get ready to be inspired.

A PATH APPEARS
With the help of the likes of Jennifer Garner, Blake Lively, and Eva Longoria, this story takes us to the U.S., Columbia, Kenya and Haiti to spotlight the personal stories of those living through some of the most serious women's issues, including teen pregnancy, sex-trafficking, poverty, violence and sexism. What I love about this one is that we also get to learn effective ways to make a real change.

GLORIA: IN HER OWN WORDS
This is Gloria Steinem's story through the eyes and words of the feminist icon herself. The story begins with Gloria as a young journalist who wore the famous bunny costume for an expose about the harsh working conditions at a Playboy Club. It continues with how she came to feminism in NY, helped found Ms Magazine and became one of the icons of the women's movement.

THE HUNTING GROUND
This story surrounding campus sexual assault sheds light on victim-blaming and just how little universities do to prevent ever prevalent sexual assault, or protect and help their students who have been victims of it.

MISS REPRESENTATION
This film talks about the injustices created by gender stereotypes and all the ways the media fails to portray women in a human way, and instead sells the idea that a woman's power lies within her sexuality, beauty and youth, as opposed to her character, intelligence or ambition.

IT'S A GIRL
Every year, India and China abort, kill or abandon more baby girls than are born in the United States. In this film,  experts, activists, and those with firsthand experience discuss the causes and impacts of female infanticide.

SHE'S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE'S ANGRY
This is a documentary about the birth of the women's liberation movement in the 1960s and the brilliant women who founded it. The film film recounts the stories of women who fought for their own equality and the future of women, and in the process created a world-wide revolution. It will do nothing less than inspire women and men alike to fight for feminism and human rights.

GIRL RISING
Selena Gomez, Kerry Washington, Chloë Grace Moretz, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Freida Pinto and Meryl Streep lend their voices to the stories of nine young women from impoverished and developing countries who are fighting for an education, which proves to be difficult considering issues of poverty, forced labor, sexist cultural and religious norms and a lack of schools.
