The Four-Stranded Braid- a tutorial

I am absolutely entranced by this braid- called a four-stranded or chain braid. It is pretty complicated but Allure Magazine enlisted hairstylist Matt Fugate of the New York City Sally Hershberger Downtown Salon to walk us through every single step with this tutorial.

Donna Karen Spring 2015

1. Section. Divide your hair into four sections—one from your forehead to your crown, one above each ear, and one from your crown to your nape. Drape them straight down your back between your fingers in your left hand.
2. Cross. Holding all four sections between the fingers of your left hand, take the center-left piece and cross it over all the hair all the way to the right. Hold that piece with your free right hand.
3. Add a section. Move one section from your left hand to your right—it should be the one closest to your right hand.
4. Twist. Twirl the two remaining left sections once with your left hand.
5. Repeat. Pull the two sides apart to tighten the braid and repeat steps two and three on alternating side (crossing the center-right piece over to the left and twisting the two right sections). Continue until you reach the ends, and secure the braid with a small elastic.
