Costumes in movies: Bonnie & Clyde

Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as Bonnie and Clyde are considered one of the most stylish couples to date. Who can deny Bonnie in her berets, ballet flats, neckties and mid-length skirts, and Clyde in that chalk-stripe suit?

According to costume designer Theadora Van Runkle, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in the film, the success of the Bonnie and Clyde look was that they wore mix-and match ensembles, ‘clothes people could wear to work and in their real lives'. The initial costume designs were dismissed as being too faithful to the depression era- the final looks had an added hint of glamour and New Wave style. The costumes were right out of the 1930's but seen through the 1960's lens.
