SAVE THE CHILDREN
This non-governmental organization works specifically with children and families. Save The Children is one the main charities that I keep up to date with and donate to regularly. You can donate online.
UNICEF
UNICEF is one of my most favorite charities. They do incredible work. I always urge people to get involved with them. I read the emails from them every single day and find that they are a great way to keep up to date with what is happening around the world. You can donate to UNICEF online, or by texting "Nepal" to 864233 (UNICEF). The text will result in a $10 donation.
SUMMARY
•
a 7.9 magnitute earthquake hit centered near
Kathmandu in Nepal.
•
1,457 people have been reported
dead. Rescue and relief is in its early stages so it is most certain that there
will be much more.
•
36 people have also been reported dead India, 12
in China, four in Bangladesh and six in Tibet.
•
Residents of Katmandu ran into the
streets during the quake as they watched their homes and surrounding buildings
fall to the ground. Many people say they were knocked off
their feet by the violent force.
•
Many centuries old
historic structures, including temples, were lost.
•
In just a matter of hours after the
big quake there were 12 aftershocks, one as large as a 6.6
in magnitude. As night fell, aftershocks were still hitting,
prompting waves of screaming.
•
The city’s main hospital is overwhelmed by
casualties and injured people, some with amputated limbs.
•
With nowhere to go, residents are facing a night
on the streets. Rain and thunderstorms are forecasted for the next two days.
•
There is a large concern for the
welfare of survivors, particularly children and elderly people, as
overnight temperatures are expected to drop and people were forced to make do
without electricity, running water and shelter.
•
The quake set
off avalanches around Mount Everest. 10 climbers were reported to have died and
many were injured.
I'm sure most all of you have heard about the
earthquake and may be wondering how you can help. When disasters
like this happen, it is so important to come together and support the people
and areas affected. Like in Nepal, a lot of countries and people are powerless
in these situations and desperately need the help from us as a global
community. Keeping the people affected by the quake in our thoughts in
extremely important, believe it or not. They need all our positive vibes and
energy going to them.
Other than that, donating money is the next best
thing. I know it can be hard to just give money away, and many people think
that their $10 won't help- but it does! You would really be amazed at how much
money is raised through collective effort. I have had charities tell me before
that they receive the most money overall from $10 checks they receive in the mail.
Please donate what you can- $5, $10, $100. Relief agencies need the donations
and support to help the people and areas of Nepal that have been affected.
The people of Nepal are in desperate need of medical attention and supplies,
food, water and shelter right away. Help to protect vulnerable children
and provide much needed relief to families. Keep in mind, these people
have lost everything. Their homes, clothing, food, hope, family and friends and
so much more. In addition, the hospitals are trying to accommodate
the huge influx of patients and are running short of supplies like bandages and
trauma kits. Water is already a problem in Nepal and with this disaster
there will most certainly be a huge water supply issue. With
thousands of people camped out in the streets, the city's shops are also
running low of bottled water and dry food. With 40% of Nepal's population being children, there is on doubt that children are badly affected by the earthquake
Here are two relief agencies that I trust
and know well.
