Why I Don't Celebrate Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is rooted in a fraudulent story when the historical reality is that of mass genocide of indigenous people. The argument that we can ignore the collective cultural definition of Thanksgiving and create our own meaning is just odd to me. There is nothing about the day that feels celebratory, and the fact that we come together around the senseless murder of millions of innocent turkeys is additionally not something that I can feel happy about. Thanksgiving represents mass murder to me and I just can't pretend to feel otherwise.

I choose to use this day for reflection on our history and how far we still have to go, especially given our current political situation, to achieve peace and autonomy for all people, animals and the planet.

That said, I hope everybody finds so much to be grateful for today, while keeping in mind those that are less fortunate, struggling or don't have the same freedoms and security as you do in this country.

peace and love, today and always.
