Sustainable Development Goals- The Issues On The Global Agenda For The Next 15 Years

This past Friday, September 25th, countries all over the world adopted the Sustainable Development Goalsa set of 17 global goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.  See what's on the new global agenda after the jump!

The Sustainable Development goals will build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were established in 2000 and will end on December 31, 2015. The MDGs were a set of 8 anti-poverty goals that were aimed to be achieved by 2015. The goals also addressed a variety of issues, including ending poverty, hunger, disease, gender inequality, and improving on access to water and sanitation. The MDGs fell short in 3 major areas- women’s and girls’ equality, environmental issues, and poverty eradication, but enormous progress has been made in many other areas, showing the importance of having a unifying global agenda and set of goals.

The SDGs go a step further and aim to address the root causes of poverty and the universal need for development that works for all people. Check out the full list of the 17 SDG goals below and head over to UN.org to get an in-depth explanation on each.
